WELCOME TO THE SPRINGS OF ACHERON

WALK INTO THE MYTH

AN UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE AWAITS YOU
The Springs of Acheron
In the Epirus region of northwestern Greece lie the Sources of the mythical river Acheron. A river of great importance in Greek mythology, the Acheron is known for its significance as the entrance to the underworld, the realm of Hades. One of the five rivers of the Greek underworld, the Acheron plays an important role in the geography of the underworld.
The Acheron River crosses the Prefectures of Ioannina, Thesprotia and Preveza and has a total length of 64 kilometers. It has been navigable since ancient times and is today one of the main and cleanest rivers in Greece. However, the Acheron is a unique river that anyone can cross and explore. Every visitor has the opportunity to enjoy the walk from the springs to the mills of Souli in the cool waters of the Acheron.
The Acheron River area presents diverse historical, ecological and naturalistic interest and has been included in the European Network of Protected Areas Nature 2000 “NATURA 2000” (code GR2140001). It is noteworthy that it remains an important destination for myth lovers, history lovers and nature lovers to this day. In particular, the natural beauty, culturally rich history and mythological significance of the area make it a unique and unforgettable destination, and a must-visit for anyone traveling to Greece.
An exciting experience at the Springs of Acheron begins
The starting point for crossing the river and the springs is our hotel. From the hotel begins a 300-meter path that will lead you to the first large spring of the river.
Then you will continue your journey through the water, having the opportunity to see the other springs along the river as well as the large ravines of the canyon.
You can cross the river along its entire length, reach the “Dala” bridge and then, for the more adventurous, to the mills of Souli.
According to popular tradition, the waters of the Acheron River were bitter as a “monster” that lived in its sources was poisoning the waters. Saint Donatos, patron saint of the Metropolis of Paramythia in Thesprotia, killed the monster and the waters of the Acheron became sweet. This is how the village of Glyki got its name.
Also, an interesting element from ancient Greek mythology that testifies to its continuation in modern popular tradition is the following: During the Titanic War, the Titans drank water from Acheron to quench their thirst, an event that provoked the wrath of Zeus, who turned its waters black and bitter.
